ACHIEVE Project

Background

The ACHIEVE Project (2017–2022) was implemented in Abuja as part of efforts to provide integrated HIV prevention, care, and support services for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) and their households.

The project was supported by the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) and focused on contributing to improved health, safety, education, and stability for vulnerable children and their families.

As part of the intervention, Total Life for All Community Development Initiative (TL4A) contributed primarily to HIV prevention and awareness activities, with a focus on reaching vulnerable individuals and households within target communities with relevant information, risk-reduction messages, and linkages to available HIV-related services.

Goal

To contribute to reducing HIV-related vulnerability among orphans, vulnerable children, caregivers, and households through community-based prevention, awareness creation, risk-reduction education, and linkage to appropriate HIV services.

Objectives

1. Increase awareness of HIV prevention and risk-reduction practices among vulnerable individuals and households.
2. Promote knowledge and understanding of HIV-related risks and available support services within target communities.
3. Identify individuals and households requiring HIV-related services and facilitate appropriate linkages and referrals.
4. Strengthen community participation and support systems for vulnerable children and their caregivers.

Target Beneficiaries

The project focused on vulnerable populations, including:

• Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC)
• Caregivers and vulnerable households
• Community members at risk of HIV
• Other vulnerable individuals within the target communities

Key Activities

• Community-based HIV awareness and sensitization activities.
• Provision of information on HIV prevention and risk-reduction practices.
• Community education on HIV-related risks and available services.
• Engagement with vulnerable households and community members.
• Identification of individuals who required further HIV-related support.
• Risk assessment and appropriate referral/linkage to HIV testing and other relevant services.
• Promotion of community support mechanisms for vulnerable children and their caregivers.
• Follow-up and support for vulnerable beneficiaries through appropriate referral pathways.

TL4A's Role

TL4A's contribution to the ACHIEVE Project was primarily focused on prevention and awareness creation at the community level.

The organization supported efforts to increase knowledge about HIV, promote safer and healthier practices, engage vulnerable community members, and connect individuals who required additional services with appropriate service providers.

Through this approach, TL4A contributed to bringing HIV prevention information and support closer to vulnerable individuals and households in the communities where the intervention was implemented.

Key Outcomes

• Increased community awareness of HIV prevention and risk-reduction practices.
• Improved access to information on HIV-related risks and available support services.
• Vulnerable individuals and households were identified and linked to appropriate HIV-related services where necessary.
• Strengthened community-level engagement and support for OVC and their caregivers.
• Contributed to the broader ACHIEVE Project objective of ensuring that vulnerable children and households were healthy, safe, supported, and stable.
